Author and financial expert Patrick Geddes says the secret to building serious wealth has nothing to do with intelligence, market timing, or hot stock tips. And he's got the data to prove it. In the first episode of this four-part investing series with the former CEO of Aperio Group, Patrick cuts through the jargon and intimidation that makes investing feel out of reach for so many people.
"Good habits are more important than brilliance," is his key message.
To illustrate the power of compounding, Patrick shares the story of Grace Groner, who bought three shares of stock for $180 in 1935 and — by simply never selling — watched that investment grow to $7.2 million by the time she died in 2010. No financial genius, just patience.
Patrick also challenges one of the most persistent myths in personal finance: that good investing must be complicated.
He makes a compelling case for boring index funds, citing data showing that over a 15-year period, 90% of actively managed stock funds failed to beat the S&P 500. After taxes, that number jumps to 98%.
So what should investors focus on? According to Patrick, it comes down to starting early, keeping fees low, diversifying, and above all, resisting the urge to react.
"The investors chief problem and even his worst enemy is likely to be himself," he quotes legendary investor Benjamin Graham.

As chair of the FDIC during the 2008 financial crisis, Sheila Bair watched homeowners get taken in by predatory lenders offering loans they didn't understand. Now she's channeling those real-world schemes into children's books themes with the goal of creating a generation of skeptical consumers who can protect themselves from financial predators.
In this session, Sheila will discuss her new book coming out this month, what she thinks should be taught in personal finance classrooms, and how to help students ask questions and think critically about financial offers before it's too late.
Register to join us tonight (April 9) with Sheila Blair at 4pm PT / 7pm ET.
