How “Job Hugging” Could Tank Your Career

In today’s economy, many people are “job hugging”, or staying in a job they don’t like. But, is it really the right move for their career?

Two Cents’ video, How “Job Hugging” Could Tank Your Career, explains how loyalty between employers and employees has evolved over time, what market forces are pushing people to “job hug”, and how “job hugging” can impact peoples’ careers.

Questions:

  • At the beginning of the video, several trendy workplace terms are mentioned (like quiet quitting and office peacocking). Why do you think these kinds of phrases become popular, and what do they suggest about how people feel about work today?
  • “Job hugging” is described as staying in a job out of fear or uncertainty. What kinds of fears do you think push people to job hug, and how are those fears connected to the current economy?
  • The video compares job hugging to the earlier “Great Resignation.” What do these two trends reveal about how quickly attitudes toward work can change?
  • The video explains how long-term loyalty between employers and employees used to be more common. What do you think workers gained from that system, and what might they have lost?
  • What do you think an ideal relationship between employers and employees looks like? Explain.
