Just One Resource - The Real Relationship Test: Reconcile Your Finances
In this weekly blog post, the Curriculum team will highlight Just One Resource from our NGPF collection that maybe doesn't get the attention it deserves. Use it this week or bookmark it for later.
[The Resource] The Real Relationship Test: Reconcile Your Finances
The Gist: Students are assigned a profile of a person to roleplay who is getting married to their partner. They are given details such as occupation, salary, debt, and more! Students partner up "speed-dating" style with their peers and practice reconciling different aspects of their finances.
The Best Parts:
- Students are exposed to the myriad of questions they would need to ask a future partner when merging their finances.
- Students think about what financial goals the person they are playing would have in the next 1, 5, and 10 years.
- Students have the opportunity to reflect on the importance of having a conversation about finances before getting married in the future.
This is a project that we've heard teachers love using in the classroom, because it gets students up and moving, generates rich discussion, and illuminates the importance of having the (sometimes awkward or challenging) conversation about finances with a serious partner.

Sonia has always been passionate about instruction and improving students' learning experiences. She's come a long way since her days as a first grader, when she would "teach" music and read to her very attentive stuffed animals after school. Since then, she has taught students as a K-12 tutor, worked in several EdTech startups in the Bay Area, and completed her Ed.M in Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She is passionate about bringing the high quality personal finance content and instruction she wished she'd received in school to the next generation of students and educators. When she isn't crafting lesson guides or working with teachers, Sonia loves to spend her time singing, being outdoors, and adventuring with family and friends!
