403bwise.org Event: Public Student Loan Forgiveness Waiver (July 21, 2022)

Our friends at 403bwise.org are hosting an event on July 21st at 4pm PT that anyone who has ever contemplated Public Student Loan Forgiveness should attend.

Why? In a nutshell, the Public Student Loan Forgiveness program has been a mess. Long on promise and very short on execution. In fact, prior to Sept. 2019, only 2% of applicants had received forgiveness and complaints poured in about complicated rules, poor customer service and so many gave up in frustration. But the results are improving (as of Dec. 2021 the number had climbed to 13%) and there's a temporary fix that has helped. The Dept. of Education has created a temporary waiver which makes it easier to qualify.

From the Dept. of Education website:

Most of the PSLF qualifying payment rules have been suspended through October 31, 2022. Under this temporary waiver, you may get credit for payments you’ve made on loans that would not normally qualify for PSLF. These payments will count even if you didn’t pay the full amount or on-time. However, only payments made after Oct. 1, 2007 can count as qualifying payments. For more information, visit the limited PSLF waiver page.

Want to learn more about the Speaker, looks like Dan and Scott hosted David Gourley on their podcast. The advantage of the live session is that you get to ask questions!!!

About the Author

Tim Ranzetta

Tim's saving habits started at seven when a neighbor with a broken hip gave him a dog walking job. Her recovery, which took almost a year, resulted in Tim getting to know the bank tellers quite well (and accumulating a savings account balance of over $300!). His recent entrepreneurial adventures have included driving a shredding truck, analyzing executive compensation packages for Fortune 500 companies and helping families make better college financing decisions. After volunteering in 2010 to create and teach a personal finance program at Eastside College Prep in East Palo Alto, Tim saw firsthand the impact of an engaging and activity-based curriculum, which inspired him to start a new non-profit, Next Gen Personal Finance.
